First Impression on OLPC

September 3rd, 2007 by thai

One Laptop Per Child, a laptop for kids in developing countries. My roommate in APNG camp is an OLPC’s sound driver developer. I got a chance to take a hand of an OLPC. This gadget has a webcam, waterproof keyboard, wireless 802.11s (b/g mesh!), USB slots, but no Ethernet and VGA outputs. The screen can be twisted and it has buttons and arrows for gaming. Many bugs found in OLPC like the charging unit, possibly the BIOS for recognizing the battery condition (full/empty). OLPC also comes with a yoyo type driven charger with only some pulls of a hand to charge the laptop. Interesting gadget. Subject to market at US$100 to US$170.

JGOS 2007, 14-15 May 2007

Jogja Goes Open Source, here I am in Jogjakarta writing this blog. Since this is a national event, many participants came from places very far from Jogja like Jambi, Manado, etc. For this two-day seminar I stayed at Indraloka Homestay, it surprised me that this place provides free Internet with hotspot, and cable TV in rooms, including HBO, all for a very fair price; although the breakfast was not enough for me.
In the seminar room, the organizer provides free Internet as well, with wireless. Overall the speakers of this seminar were talking about how to make government and educations, even companies to have confidence with Linux implementation.
Yesterday was the only day I could walk around the city and buy some gifts (bakpia patok, etc.) for home. Too bad it was raining in the afernoon I had to take a cab for some short distance which I would rather walk if it wasn’t raining. And in the evening I had dinner with AIT friends (Novi+Pie, Brian and Mira) at Mai Mai Barbeque Cafe. Very very hot and spicy dishes, delicious.

Koreans love to kill, Japanese loves suicide

The Virginia Tech’s massacre reminds me of the Korean movie "Old Boy". A guy nails off people with hammer as a revenge after so many years in jail. It’s a very violent yet disgusting movie.

test drive MS Windows Vista & Office 2007

January 31st, 2007 by thai

Opening the box from Microsoft last week, we received Vista Business edition and Office 2007. (This is the first time for Microsoft to launch its Windows and Office at the same time). I fired up my old computer with XP pro as the existing OS. Since Vista is an ‘upgrade’ operating system, I decided to upgrade this machine to Vista. It’s a Pentium 4 1.6Ghz with 512MB of RAM. The whole upgrade process took me about 1 hour, and guess what, it actually wiped out everything, no single programs from previous OS were there anymore. The old windows system was moved to a folder called Windows.old in the C: drive.
Even the MBR was wiped, meaning I have to restore the boot loader again for the Ubuntu on another partition to be able to do multi-boot again, duh! I’m still not sure whether Vista’s partition can be detected by the boot loader.
Installing Office 2007, the amount of memory the process took was growing from around 380MB to more than 400MB, including the OS itself. Installing Office 2007 (default, not custom) was almost as long as installing Vista (perhaps longer, I don’t know, it all depends on your system I suppose).
The whole point is, I feel like I’m still using XP with Vista theme :P

3G - do you really need it?

December 6th, 2006 by thai

Imagine this:
- you wake up in the morning at 6, going to the office at 7
- from 7 to 5 you’re in front of the computer
- you have everything from voice, internet, etc. - for free
- at 6 you’re home for dinner and tv
- sleep for 8 hours
Hence, you don’t even need a cell phone.

Fireworks - the only entertainment during Ied holiday

October 29th, 2006 by thai

Fireworks! yeah, the only entertainment we had during the holiday. I blew up some colorful festival canon fireworks in the high altitude of Tawangmangu, central java. It surprised me that these ‘made in china’ fireworks had wonderful splash effects up on the sky, very high enough, I can say it was about 100 meters above the ground. Cost me from 35 thousands Rupiahs to 120 thousands Rupiahs, each. Ouch :(, but I got what I paid for. Each canon fired 8 shots, with very deep boom base sound (imagine that), up on the sky it filled almost the whole view angle from below, yeah, very big. These chinese fireworks are just great.

Black Canyon Coffee in Surabaya
